Since Google's appearance in 1998, search optimization has been critical to a website's success. Before that date only Yahoo was important - a directory listed alphabetically like the Yellow Pages.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) embodies a range of techniques designed to get a website a ranking in Google's top ten for a keyphrase that a visitor will be likely to enter into Google's textbox to find similar websites. Most people set their Google to the default ten search results per page and only 35% of them ever go to the second page if the required result is not on the first page. Hence the importance of getting on the first page.

There is no 'silver bullet' that weill, on its own guarantee a number one. A variety of small adjustments act to render a website 'friendly' to search engines and therefore likely to gain a high position.
